First Reflection Task: My Teaching Metaphor

From my point of view, education is part of the social transformation and emancipation and teaching is an activity which implies three main elements: freedom, knowledge and empowerment. Each one of these words relies on the other to build up a strong basis for education.  The overwhelming impact that teachers have on the learners’ behavior and way of thinking suggests that teachers are in charge of empowering the society. As Freire’s (1998) philosophy, “any pedagogy is embedded in relations of power and dominance and is employed to create and sustain social inequalities”. Teaching a foreign language is not my main role of performance as a teacher but educating learners for raising awareness of the current issues of society as well as makes them think critically about them.  I always tend to be a knowledge generator instead of a knowledge transmitter.  I think that knowledge has to be co-constructed based on what we perceived from the reality. As you can see in my drawing, it is represented in the different shapes and colors that are right above the people. To conclude, each learner has the freedom, the knowledge and the power to be inclined to any profession or any belief.

  1. Hello Goretti,
Thank you for sharing your beautiful metaphor. From my point of view it contains a high social awareness, I’m quite convinced that is a positive caracteristic of good teachers. Based on your drawing Ithink you as a very important element in your students' development, they do not only learn a foreign language but also, you give them the opportunity to learn values that will lead them to become active members of our society. I indeed liked the words freedom, knowledge and emporwerment, they are main ingredients for your goals.
I would like to know more about your teaching philosophy.
    Thank you.

  2. Goretti. You have showed three important words that all teachers should bear in mind when teaching: freedom, knowledge and empowerement. As Anita said teaching is more than content. Teachers also have a social responsability with their students. Goretti, How do you usually show or convince your students that they can succeed?

  3. Hi Goretti
This is a very beautiful metaphor, i really like as Sandra mentioned, the words Freedom, Knowledge and empowerement. I think that the role of a teacher goes beyond merely content, as you say it is important to teach our students to think and act in a more critical way. in this sense we are building up a new society, full of people with values and many talents.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. Hi dear Goretty!
I liked your metaphor a lot! I totally agree with the conception that learners co-construct their knowledge while they interact with their social context. Thus, through such experience, they become critical thinkers and sensitive reflectioners of their learning.

  5. Dear Goretty,
I agree with you, knowledge is socially constructed. teachers need to foster critical thinking in our students regarding social and cultural issues.

  6. I think you made a good reference on what a teacher must do all the time in term of his/her profession. We all teachers must always bear in mind that creating a better society is our main goal without taking into account our teaching specialty.
